Enhance your holiday travel experience by downloading this audio tour and exploring Cleveland to Ohio.
This program is designed to be played in your vehicle while driving Interstate 480 and 80 east (the Ohio Turnpike) from Cleveland to Youngstown, Ohio. It offers a timed commentary about features in this region. The route begins where I-480 separates from I-271, southeast of Cleveland. Well pass Twinsburg before reaching the Ohio Turnpike where I-480 ends. Continuing east on the Turnpike, well pass Ravenna, Windham, Warren, and Lordstown on our way to Youngstown.
During the early sections of this route, we might be surprised at how much forest we travel through, given the proximity of the major metropolitan center of Cleveland. When white settlers arrived in Ohio, the land was 95% forested. By 1900, that figure was down to 10%. But trees are making a comeback: presently about 30% of Ohio land is forested.
As we continue along this route, well notice some farm buildings in disrepair; some of the fields have not been planted. This is a clue about the economy of the region. Farming is in decline, and most of those who do farm have day jobs to pay the bills. Clues to the new economy? Watch for what's recently constructed, what seems fresh and well maintained.
Youngstown is known for its history as a steel producing center, but the city has made other contributions to American life. The Good Humor ice cream bar originated in Youngstown, as did Arby's Roast Beef. Also, Harry, Sam, Abe and Jack Warner hailed from Youngstown. The brothers were Polish immigrants, soap salesmen who established a chain of nickelodeons, so named because of the admission price: a nickel. From these humble beginnings has developed the worlds largest media company. Can you name it?
