Beauvais cathedral was to have been the highest in France. Alas, pride comes before a fall, and the collapse of the great tower put an end to the work - but what remains is still impressive. It's a masterpiece of Gothic style, with some fine stained glass and the original wooden doors to its flamboyant transepts.

We also visit the tiny Carolingian cathedral, which would have been demolished if the Gothic work had ever been finished, and we look at the romanesque church of Saint-Etienne with its 'wheel of fortune' sculpture.

Not perhaps the most touristic of cities - much of Beauvais was flattened in the War - but definitely one for the connoisseur of medieval architecture!
