Bourges is the must-visit French Gothic city. Its cathedral is the most visionary of any great Gothic church - a massive and ruthlessly unified space, still with its fine original stained glass; its merchant houses are fine, and above all there's the town palace of Jacques Coeur, the richest man in France in his time. We'll meet Jacques and his rival as patron of the arts, the Duc de Berry (if you've seen the lovely illuminations in the 'Tres Riches Heures', it belonged to him) - and we'll find out why Jacques Coeur ended his days in exile, after being 'fitted up' by an avaricious King of France.
