Podtour of Ely city and cathedral |
|
Ely now is a little country town dominated by its huge cathedral. But in the Middle Ages, the monastery was hugely wealthy, and this island in the then undrained Fens was a hive of commerce and artistic endeavour. We'll see how Alan of Walsingham, an ambitious clerk, transformed the Norman cathedral into a triumph of the Gothic, using the best craftsmen from the royal court - and sympathise with his disappointment as, though put forward for the Bishop's throne twice, he saw lesser men promoted ahead of him.
