Santa Maria del Popolo is a microcosm of the history of Rome - and a fine introduction to Roman Renaissance and Baroque art. Sited where the ancient Via Flaminia enters the city, it's a Renaissance church which was upated by Bernini in the seventeenth century, but still retains much of its original decor. There's a marvellous private chapel illustrated by Pinturicchio with pastel coloured frecoes of great elegance and charm; and there's the High Renaissance chapel of the Chigi banking family, by Raphael, which was completed by Bernini. If you want to understand the difference between Renaissance and Baroque styles you only have to look at this chapel and all will be made clear!
