In Shakespeare's day Southwark - outside the boundaries of the City of London - was a place where the free market reigned supreme and vice, theatre and fun held sway. It's been associated with brewing for hundreds of years - and Chaucer's pilgrims set off from the tavern-lined Borough High Street.

We'll explore its rowdy history and see a little of its quieter side too. With 'bit parts' played by actors, poets and playwrights such as John Gower, Beaumont & Fletcher, and Ben Jonson - as well as a certain Sir John Falstolf, who really did exist and owned a pub here!
